College Student

I am a college or a university student:  Focused on teaching the grammar and conversational skills needed to meet university course requirements. Kukulcan has strong relationships with colleges and universities in the U.S., Canada and Europe that grant transferability of college credits.

Spanish Courses For College & University Students

For Groups and Individuals

Kukulcan has a finely-tuned and well-planned curriculum consisting of Spanish grammar classes, conversation classes, and cultural programs that fit together to create the perfect learning environment for college and university students. You can enroll in classes at Kukulcan any time during the year, and stay for as long as you want, from a few weeks to several months. Our Spanish classes start every Monday all year round, contact us for determining if your specific course is offered on a particular Monday .

We also offer internships in select fields such as business, journalism, and education.

For students who are seeking volunteer opportunities in Mexico, we combine language classes and work experience in orphanages, schools, senior centers and other local institutions.

Some universities organize their own program through Kukulcan and send their students with a group leader. Others send their students alone and accept transfer credit. Check with your home institution to discuss your options. Whether you choose to come with a group or come on your own, you can be sure you’re in good hands.

Profesors: Are you interested in organizing an immersion program through Kukulcan?  We can help you customize the classes to fit your needs, contact us.

We work with your home institution to determine the number of contact lessons you need to get credit for a full academic quarter or semester.  Study at Kukulcan for 10, 12 or 15 weeks (depending on your home institution’s system), and stay on track for graduation.  At the same time, you’ll dramatically improve your fluency in the Spanish language and gain valuable experience from living abroad.

You’ll be in a total Spanish immersion environment, living with a Mexican host family and participating in the many extracurricular activities and cultural excursions that Kukulcan organizes during the term. A semester or quarter-long stay in Cuernavaca will give you time to develop close friendships with local people and to integrate yourself more fully into the community.

Most students who qualify for financial aid at their home institutions are able to use that money for study abroad. Talk to a financial aid advisor at your college or univeristy to see if this is an option for you.

Check with the Spanish department at your home university to find out how study abroad credits can be transferred. You may get credit for Spanish language or Latin American Studies courses, depending on your university’s requirements.  We’re happy to work with your academic advisors if they have questions about our Immersion Spanish programs.  For more information, contact us, or put your advisor or professor in touch with us to work out a program for you.

Kukulcan offers a unique intensive language and cultural learning experience in Cuernavaca, Mexico in December and January each year to coincide with your school’s winter break.

Learn Spanish and enjoy one of the most festive times of the year in Mexico: the Christmas and New Year holidays.  Experience the traditional posadas, parades, special foods and celebrations (including the arrival of the Three Wise Men bringing gifts to children) in the City of Eternal Spring.  Winter in Cuernavaca is mild and sunny, with average temperatures in the 70s.  Kukulcan’s Winter immersion program will help you enhance your knowledge of the Spanish language and Mexican culture.  Check with your home institution to find out how to transfer credit.  Contact us for more information.

Students who want a Summer study abroad experience have many options at Kukulcan. You can come as part of an organized group, or come on your own.  Come for any period of time, from two weeks to two months, beginning on any Monday.  Regardless of your proficiency level when you start the program, you’ll be amazed at how quickly your Spanish improves when you enroll in an intensive Spanish immersion program like the one we offer at Kukulcan.  Summer classes fill up fast, so contact us early to find out more about them.

Kukulcan offers specialized Spanish language courses for business students, along with culture classes that teach you how to interact more effectively with Latin American clients. Our instructors have experience in the business world and are trained to teach Business Spanish to international students. You’ll learn Spanish vocabulary for the business world, and have practical grammar classes that increase your fluency.  Whether you come as part of an organized group through your school or you come on your own, we can provide you with a custom-fit program to meet your needs.  Start on any Monday, any time during the year, and stay for any length of time, from two weeks to an entire quarter or semester.  For students who already have high-intermediate proficiency in Spanish, we can combine your Business Spanish classes with volunteer work opportunities or an internship.  For more information about our Business programs in Spanish, contact us.

Students with Latino roots who want to learn more about their heritage and improve their formal knowledge of the Spanish language can benefit from an Immersion Spanish class in Mexico that is especially designed for heritage or bilingual speakers of Spanish.  Students who grew up speaking Spanish at home often communicate well in Spanish at an informal level but have trouble writing and understanding more complex grammar points. We help you polish your Spanish so it more closely resembles the language of educated native speakers.  At Kukulcan, we take enormous pride in our Hispanic heritage, and we love to share it with Latino students.  Culture classes help you understand the history and social issues that have influenced the development of Mexican culture, as well as the literary and artistic achievements of the people.  Practical hands-on workshops teach you about traditional cooking, music and dance, arts and crafts.  Typical excursions take you to historical and archeological sites of importance, local markets and fairs, museums, parks, or to a colorful and folkloric village to experience a regional festival.

These innovative Spanish ‘hands on” language programs are available for students with specific career goals. Internships and service learning opportunities provide a chance for students to integrate their Spanish language skills with experiential learning in Mexico´s industrial, commercial, educational, agricultural, media, or governmental sectors.

If you want academic credit for an internship or a service learning program, contact your home department to find out the number of hours and credits you can receive, and if there is a minimum stay required.  We recommend a stay of at least five weeks, up to an entire year.  Be sure to have your plan approved in advance of travel to Mexico by your home institution so your credits will be transferred without a problem.  Contact us to work out the details.

Short-term internships, long-term internships and service learning opportunities are customized to meet your career goals. You’ll perfect your language skills at Kukulcan and work (part time or full time) to gain experience in your field.  We can help you with living arrangements during your stay in Mexico.  Internships and service learning work are considered educational experiences, and there is no salary attached to the work you do.

Volunteer opportunities are also available for students who do not need academic credit for their work in Mexico.  If you would like to volunteer a few hours a week (or more) while you’re studying at Kukulcan, we help place you in local institutions and services where you will have an opportunity to practice Spanish and interact with native speakers.  Doing volunteer work in Mexico is a wonderful way to gain practical experience and integrate yourself into the community, while practicing responsible global citizenship.

Requirements for Internships in México:

  1. High-intermediate Spanish language proficiency (typically 300 level work at the university). If you have a lower level of Spanish language proficiency upon arrival in Mexico, you will need to do full-time intensive language training at Kukulcan to bring your Spanish up to speed before you can start work.
  2. A GPA of 2.5 or higher at your home institution.
  3. Proof of health insurance for the length of stay in Mexico.

If you want to do an internship in Mexico, you need to complete the application process at least two months prior to the date you want to start your work study program here.

Kukulcan´s Internship Committee (KIC) monitors and evaluates the intern’s progress.  We make periodic visits to the work sites to observe students as they perform their assigned tasks. The KIC also makes recommendations to intern sponsors about quality control and enhancement of the work experience. Kukulcan provides an orientation program for interns, and oversees the student´s completion of the midterm reports, final reports and the final evaluation of the project.  We can arrange internships in a number of fields, such as business, marketing, journalism, video production, social work, etc.  Contact us if you want us to design an internship for you.

Kukulcan has articulation agreements through the Mexican Ministry of Education with private schools in the area, such as the Colegio Cuernavaca. This allows us to arrange a student teaching practicum for education majors. The practicum is available to English, Spanish, or French language teaching assistants. The hours worked in Mexican schools may fulfill graduation requirements for student teachers. Check with your home institution to find out what their requirements are.
